Self reflection
Throughout the podcast process, I noticed that composing content for a new genre and a new audience really did impact my choices for other aspects of the rhetorical situation - more specifically, I noticed a change in my overall tone, message, and organizational skills. While writing my personal narrative, I felt as if I was more so telling a story; during my podcast recording, I felt as if I was focusing on the importance of mental health and how dogs play a part in that. My organization differed from the essay by being more bullet-based rather than complete sentences; I tried the complete sentence method, and it felt as if I were just reading from a script. Going based off of bullet points really helped the creativity flow for my partner and I, and it resulted in the podcast having a steady, chatty conversation rather than being choppy and staged.
Going off of my organization, I also noticed that my composition process definitely differed when it came to creating a podcast versus an essay. While writing an essay, I like to plan out every last thing - essentially, I write the essay before I actually write the essay... if that makes any sense. When it came to the podcast, I just let the conversation flow. My partner and I only had key words/phrases we knew we wanted to add, as well as certain lines from our essays that we knew would be relevant.
Specifically, during our podcast, we liked to use our descriptive sentences from our essays so we could really help create an image in our audiences' heads of what our sweet dogs look like. My partner and I also chose to include our stories of how our dogs came into our lives - while we didn't repeat word-for-word what we wrote, we summarized it pretty well which helped get the message across from our writing. To differ from our essays, we chose to talk about mental health and how dogs/pets can help with depressive feelings and anxieties. Ultimately, we both had different messages in our essays and we felt that this was a great approach to take to truly tie our meanings together.
The most challenging parts of this assignment would have to be time management with your partner(s), and just clicking with them (at least long enough to talk back and forth for 20 minutes). Luckily, my partner and I got along great and worked really well together. The most interesting part would definitely have to be tying our essays together. They are both so unique and the fact that we were able to come to a consensus on a message was really cool to see happen, and the fact that we both wrote about our dogs made it even better.
